Do I need a lawyer if I am facing foreclosure?

We have defaulted on our mortgage since Nov. 1, 2010, have tried to sell for a year and a half, and have been unsuccessful. We received the foreclosure notice from the mortgage note owner's lawyer today. We DO NOT want to keep the property. At this point, we would rather let it go. Do we need a lawyer for the court hearings?
