If I am appointed Power of Attorney for my husband...?

If I am appointed Power of Attorney for my husband, when he leaves for military obligations will I be able to handle his child custody matters. Mainly, show up to mediation and court hearings upon his behalf. His attorney suggested I be given POA, in the event his child's mother try to file papers while he is away. I would just like to be sure I can handle mediations and such while he is gone. I am very aware I should discuss this with an attorney, and I have an appointment to do such. I would just like to hear some of your opinions, and experiences with things of this nature if anyone has any. Thanks very much for your time and contributions.
