Please tell me about this area of center city Philadelphia.?

I plan to visit Philly and stay in a hotel near the convention center at 12th and Race Streets. Is this an o.k. area? I know that years back it was terrible. Also, how far is it to 1500 Locust Street? I have to walk and am somewhat disabled. Thank you.
